Are There Different Sizes Of Bernese Mountain Dogs?
As we learned from the Bernese Mountain Dog size chart above, there’s a noticeable difference between male and female dogs. This is especially common in larger breeds. But keep in mind, the numbers are not set in stone and some pups can fall slightly outside the breed standards.
Of course, as the Bernese Mountain Dog is a large-sized breed, it’s not the best option for people who don’t have enough space for a big boy. As a result, the equally great Mini Bernese Mountain Dog size is well sought after.
However, keep in mind that a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog technically comes in just “one size”. If you do come across a Mini Bernese Mountain Dog, it’s most likely a hybrid breed of the Bernese and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Usually, the Mini Bernese Mountain Dogs weigh between 35 and 55 pounds with a height of 16 to 19 inches.
Additionally, there’s also the adorable and highly popular Bernedoodle. This is a hybrid cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle. As Poodles come in three different sizes, you’ll be able to find either Tiny, Mini, or Standard Bernedoodles. What’s more, Bernedoodles are best suited for people with allergies, as they tend to shed a lot less. In fact, we’ve created the Bernedoodle size guide, which will give you a good overview of all the Bernedoodle sizes.
Bernese Mountain Dog Size Charts & Growth Patterns – Month Wise
Similarly to other breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog will grow fastest in the first 6 months. As it is a large-breed dog, you’ll see your puppy growing rapidly with each passing week. From 6 months old and onwards, you can expect a Bernese’s growth to gradually slow down. A Bernese Mountain Dog will usually reach its full adult height around their first birthday. But they’ll keep on gaining some more weight, bulking, and filling up their chest up until their second birthday. And some very large pups might take even longer than that.
Here’s an average Bernese Mountain Dog size chart by age:
Age | 3 months | 6 months | 9 months | 12 months | 24 months |
Weight | 35 pounds | 65 pounds | 80 pounds | 85 pounds | 95 pounds |
Height | 17 inches | 22 inches | 24 inches | 26 inches | 26 inches |
As we can see from the Bernese Mountain Dog size chart above, at 3 months old, these puppies already show great size. By 6 months old, they usually have reached most of their full height and ⅔ of their full weight. At 12 months old, a Bernese Mountain Dog has likely finished growing in height, and has reached most of its adult weight. They will then continue to grow at a much slower pace, and plateau at their full weight around or before their second birthday.
By looking at the weight and height of your dog at certain points in puppyhood, you can get a good estimate of your Bernese Mountain Dog’s full-grown size. Of course, all puppies grow at their own rate. Some dogs grow up faster, some slower than others. In case you’re worried about your Bernese’s growth, make sure to consult with your veterinarian.

Are Bernese Mountain Dogs Big?
Bernese Mountain Dogs are in fact big and categorized as large-breed dogs. As they are larger in size and have pretty high energy levels for a large dog, this breed would thrive best in a more spacious home with a fenced backyard.
How Big Is A Full Grown Bernese Mountain Dog?
How big does a Bernese Mountain Dog grow? Male dogs usually weigh between 80-115 pounds and stand 25-27.5 inches tall at the shoulder. Females are slightly smaller, as they weigh about 70-95 pounds and stand around 23-26 inches tall at the shoulder.
You can calculate their potential adult weight at 23 weeks by taking what they weigh at that age and multiplying it by two.
A different formula you could use is:
- Growth = current weight / current age in weeks
- Adult weight = Growth x 52 (number of weeks in one year)
So, for example, if your 12-week old pup weighs 18 pounds. You simply divide the current weight by their age in weeks and multiply the result with 52:
18/ 12 = 1.5
1.5 x 52= 78 pounds
78 pounds would be the expected weight of your adult-sized Bernese Mountain Dog.
Is There A Smaller Version Of A Bernese Mountain Dog?
Of course, due to its size, the Bernese Mountain Dog might not be an option for some people. If you’re keen on adopting a pup with very similar traits to the Bernese Mountain Dog, look for hybrid breeds consisting of the Bernese Mountain Dog and another purebred dog like Poodle (results in a Bernedoodle) or Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (often called Mini Bernese Mountain Dog).
