Bulldog Size Predictions: How Big Does A Bulldog Get?
Also known as the English Bulldog, Bulldogs are adorable, chunky looking dogs. Although their distinctive features might make them intimidating to some, Bulldogs are actually very sweet, loving, and calm companions. Bulldogs are well-known for being courageous, curious, and social. If you’re looking for a friendly pup who enjoys a relaxed lifestyle, a Bulldog will be up to the task.
But how big does a Bulldog get exactly? In terms of height, this pup will not grow into a tall dog. By the AKC breed standards, Bulldogs stand 14 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder. Of course, some pups might fall slightly outside the height range. But for a frame that short, Bulldogs do weigh quite a bit – typically around 40 to 50 pounds.
When it comes to predicting a puppy’s adult size, there’s a variety of factors that we must take into account. These include their gender, their genetics, diet, and how much they exercise. That’s why it’s especially important you feed your dog the right amount of food based on their size and exercise levels. Bulldogs are prone to obesity so carrying excess body weight can be very damaging to your pup’s health. Are There Different Sizes Of Bulldog?
Technically, Bulldogs come in just ‘one size’. Although by the AKC breed standards the average Bulldog size should be 14 to 15 inches in height, owners have reported their pups to fall slightly outside the range. In addition, like with many other breeds, females can run smaller than the male Bulldogs, weighing an average of 10 pounds less.
Here’s a Bulldog size chart for male and female Bulldogs:
Female Bulldog | Male Bulldog | |
Weight | 40-45 pounds | 50-55 pounds |
Height | 12-14 inches | 14-16 inches |
*Keep in mind that a dog’s height is not measured at the top of its head, but from the highest part of their shoulder blades, also known as the withers.
Did you know that the French Bulldog was developed from Toy Bulldogs? The Frenchie is a smaller version of the stocky Bulldog, weighing up to 28 pounds once fully grown. If you’d like to learn more about the French Bulldog’s size, make sure to check out this article.
Bulldog Size Charts & Growth Patterns – Month Wise
Bulldogs experience their growth from birth to adult similarly as other dog breeds. For the first 6 months, your puppy will experience the fastest growth stages. After that, you can expect them to gain weight and grow taller at a slower pace. Depending on their size, your Bulldog will most likely finish growing around 12 to 18 months old.
Additionally, this is why it’s particularly important that your Bulldog puppy gets the correct nourishment he needs to grow that adorable little body into a healthy adult one. Check out these guides on best dog food for puppies here.
We’ve created an interactive Bulldog size chart and weight calculator that you can use to track and predict your puppy’s size. Make sure to try it out!
Let’s have a look at the typical Bulldog size predictions by age:
Age | 3 months | 6 months | 9 months | 12-18 months |
Weight | 16 pounds | 33 pounds | 44 pounds | 50 pounds |
Height | 8 inches | 12 inches | 14 inches | 15 inches |
Looking at the Bulldog size chart above, we see that by 6 months old, Bulldogs have already reached about 75% of their adult height and more than half of their adult weight. At 12 months old, they have usually reached their full height. Puppies will then continue to gain some more weight and fill out over the next few months. Typically, a smaller Bulldog will finish growing earlier than a larger pup.
How Big Is A Full Grown Bulldog?
A full-grown Bulldog can weigh anywhere around 40 to 50 pounds and stand 14 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder. Typically, male Bulldogs weigh about 50 to 55 pounds, and females around 40 to 45 pounds. Females can also be slightly shorter than the males.
As Bulldogs are prone to obesity, we recommend you keep a close eye on their caloric intake and track their weight. If you’re worried about your pup gaining too much weight, consult with your vet to find the best solution for your dog.
You can calculate their potential adult weight at 23 weeks by taking what they weigh at that age and multiplying it by two.
A different formula you could use is:
- Growth = current weight / current age in weeks
- Adult weight = Growth x 52 (number of weeks in one year)
So, for example, if your 12-week old pup weighs 18 pounds. You simply divide the current weight by their age in weeks and multiply the result with 52:
18/ 12 = 1.5
1.5 x 52= 78 pounds
78 pounds would be the expected weight of your adult-sized Bulldog.
Is A Bulldog Considered A Large Breed?
Based on the Bulldog’s average height and weight, they are considered as a medium-sized breed. Other dog breeds in the same height range are often considered as small or medium-sized dogs. However, thanks to the Bulldog’s chubby and muscular build on a very short frame, they are most commonly regarded as medium-sized dogs. Although small in size, it won’t be as easy picking up a Bulldog!
How Big Will My Bulldog Get?
Your puppy’s gender, diet, genetic makeup, and how much they exercise can all contribute to their size. Fortunately, there are quite a few ways how you can guesstimate your Bulldog’s full-grown size. Firstly, if you’re adopting your Bulldog from a responsible breeder, you can ask them how big the parents are, and how big do the puppies in each litter get. Usually, the litters should be pretty consistent in terms of size and other breed characteristics.
