If you’re looking for a small pup with a big personality, the Pomeranian might just be the right choice for you. Thanks to their small size and flamboyant look, Pomeranians have gained much popularity. They can thrive well in apartments, they’re fun-loving and completely devoted to their humans.

Pomeranian Size Predictions: How Big Does A Pomeranian Get?

The Pomeranian is a sturdy little fluff ball that is well-known for its remarkably tiny size, gorgeous coat, and bubbly personality. But how big does a Pomeranian get exactly? By the AKC breed standards, a Pomeranian usually weighs around 3 to 7 pounds and stands at 6 to 7 inches tall at the shoulder. That’s one tiny dog!

However, the average Pomeranian size can actually be larger than the breed standards, even reaching 10 pounds or more. Larger pups can stand at 11 to 12 inches tall at the shoulder.

Even though it’s completely normal for some puppies to grow into larger dogs, we still recommend you regularly take your puppy to check-ups at the vet. Your veterinarian will be able to keep an eye on your puppy’s growth and development and assist you better in understanding your dog’s unique needs.

This is why it’s especially important you feed your puppy with high-quality, specially formulated puppy food that your furbaby needs to grow into a healthy adult. For toy breeds like the Pomeranian, we recommend you look for dog food specially formulated for small-sized breeds.

Are There Different Sizes Of Pomeranians?

Although you might have heard about the Teacup Pomeranian size (or Mini and Toy Pomeranian size), keep in mind that Poms are extremely tiny dogs already. Moreover, toy-sized breeds are more prone to certain health problems. For instance, patellar luxation or other issues with their bone and joint development.

Of course, some Poms are naturally smaller than others. However, please be cautious when breeders claim to specialize in the Teacup Pomeranian size. Some breeders use runts or dogs with the dwarfism gene to produce new, smaller-sized Poms. As a result, the new puppies might be more susceptible to health problems and development issues, which can drastically reduce their quality of life. On the other hand, some people call regular, smaller-sized Pomeranians Teacup Poms. Pups larger than the breed standards are sometimes called Throwback Pomeranians. Generally, the Pomeranian comes in one size – some pups are just a bit larger than the breed standard states.

Additionally, there might be a small difference between male and female Pomeranians, as male dogs tend to be slightly larger than females. However, with toy breeds like the Pomeranian, the difference isn’t as vast – typically, an inch in height and a few pounds in weight.

Pomeranian Size Charts & Growth Patterns – Month Wise

As a small-sized breed, Pomeranians usually reach adulthood around or before their first birthday. Typically, Poms will grow the fastest in their first 3 months. By that time, they’ve usually reached about half their adult weight, and more than half of their full height. Additionally, dogs tend to finish growing in height sooner than they reach their adult weight.

Additionally, this is why it’s particularly important that your Pomeranian puppy gets the correct nourishment he needs to grow that adorable little body into a healthy adult one. Check out these guides on best dog food for puppies here.

Let’s take a look at the typical Pomeranian size predictions by age:

* A dog’s height is measured at its shoulder blades a.k.a the withers, not from the top of its head.

Although at 9 months old your Pom will most likely reach their full-grown height and most of their weight, they might continue to fill out in the chest and gain a bit more weight in the process. Larger Poms might even take up to 18 months to reach their full weight.

Is A Pomeranian A Small Or Medium Dog?

Pomeranians are small dogs who are categorized in the Toy Group by the American Kennel Club. Thanks to their super small size, Pomeranians can very comfortably live in an apartment. However, just like any other dog, Poms need daily exercise and playtime to feel happy and healthy. As long as you have time to spare for playtime, walks, and cuddles, your pup will most likely live a very comfortable life.

How Big Is The Average Pomeranian?

By the AKC, the standard Pomeranian size is around 3 to 7 pounds in weight and 6 to 7 inches in height. However, many Pomeranians tend to grow taller and heavier than that – to about 11 to 12 inches, and 10 to 14 pounds.

Your puppy’s size is determined by a variety of factors like the size of their parents, their gender, diet, or how much they exercise. For instance, male Pomeranians can be slightly larger than females.

You can calculate their potential adult weight at 23 weeks by taking what they weigh at that age and multiplying it by two.

A different formula you could use is:

  1. Growth = current weight / current age in weeks
  2. Adult weight = Growth x 52 (number of weeks in one year)

So, for example, if your 12-week old pup weighs 18 pounds. You simply divide the current weight by their age in weeks and multiply the result with 52:

18/ 12 = 1.5
1.5 x 52= 78 pounds

78 pounds would be the expected weight of your adult-sized Pomeranian. 😉

Moreover, as all Pomeranians are technically in the toy size category, there isn’t a separate Toy Pomeranian size or Teacup / Miniature Pomeranian size. Just like with any other dog breed, some Pomeranians are naturally larger, some are naturally smaller than others.

To conclude, as a new puppy owner, you’ve probably been spending days and nights doing research to be well prepared for the upcoming months and years with your new canine companion. Naturally, understanding the size of your dog is crucial for many reasons.
